Moles are common, and many of us probably have more than one on our face and body. As we age, we tend to develop an increasing number of moles. While most moles are harmless and do not pose an issue to our health, a small number of moles may change and develop into skin cancers. Whether a mole has been present for many years or recently appeared, the first and most important step is ensuring they are normal. A quick consultation with a trained dermatologist can provide this peace of mind. Whether you wish to remove a mole for cosmetic reasons or because the mole is causing itch, pain, or irritation, we are able to help you achieve this with excellent outcomes.

Various mole removal treatments

1. Laser removal

For small, brown, and flat moles, we recommend our AlexTrivantage pigment laser. This laser treatment can easily remove such moles by breaking down the pigment within them using laser energy. One session is usually sufficient, although additional session(s) may be needed one month later if there is still residual pigmentation. Before the laser treatment, we will numb the area either with a numbing cream or an injection. The laser procedure takes only a few minutes, and most patients are surprised to see their mole completely disappear in such a short time. Post laser, a scab will form and fall off after 1-2 weeks, leaving a pinkish-brown area that fades over time. In some cases, a small chickenpox scar may result, but these usually resolve after a couple of months. It is worth noting that moles removed by laser can sometimes recur, although the timing of recurrence can vary from months to years.

2. Combination CO2 laser + pigment laser removal

For a raised (protruding) and brown mole, we use a combination technique involving a CO2 laser to first flatten the mole, followed by a pigment laser to treat any residual brown pigmentation. This option is straightforward and painless once numbing has been administered. A scab will form and fall off after 1-2 weeks, leaving a pinkish-brown area that fades over time. Sometimes, a second treatment is required for complete removal of the pigmentation, but flattening of the mole is usually achieved after just one treatment. Moles removed by laser can sometimes recur, with the timing of recurrence varying from months to years.

3. Excision (surgical) removal

Raised moles can also be removed by cutting the mole away surgically. This is a simple 10–20 minute procedure where the mole is removed using a special device or free-hand cutting after a quick numbing injection. Stitches will be applied to close the wound. A small linear scar will be left, usually around the same length as the original mole. The advantage of this method is that recurrence is extremely rare.

Although the idea of surgery might seem intimidating, the procedure itself is straightforward and can be completed very quickly. We are also highly experienced with a high volume of mole removals performed on a daily basis.

What happens after mole removal?

After mole removal, the treated area will be slightly pink and sore for a week. You will be provided with an antiseptic solution to clean the wound and an antibiotic ointment to apply. A scab will form and fall off after 7-10 days. If stitches are used, they are usually removed after 7-10 days. The wound care process is straightforward and it is extremely rare that complications occur.

Will mole removal leave a scar?

Mole removal is a routine procedure performed multiple times a week at our clinic. We are therefore highly experienced and Dr. Ho will do her utmost to ensure minimal scarring following your mole removal. The final result will depend on the procedure you choose, your skin type, how your skin heals, and the size and location of the mole. The vast majority of patients are highly satisfied with their mole removal treatment. During your visit, we can also show you before and after photos of mole removal procedures to provide further clarity.
