SURGERY
What is dermatological surgery?
Dermatological surgery refers to the various procedures we perform in order to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the skin, hair and nails. At Stephanie Ho Dermatology, we perform a high volume of skin surgery procedures including mole removal, cyst removal, skin tag removal, age spot removal, skin biopsies and excisions.
We are able to offer a same-day removal service for most lesions at our on-site surgical theatre. Most procedures can be performed with minimal discomfort using local anaesthesia and you can be assured of expert aftercare for wound management and scar minimisation.
Some common types of dermatological surgeries carried out at Stephanie Ho Dermatology include:
- Skin biopsy: A procedure in which a sample of skin tissue is removed and examined under a microscope to diagnose or rule out skin conditions, such as skin cancer, infections, or inflammatory disorders.
- Excisional surgery: The surgical removal of skin lesions, such as moles, cysts, lipomas (benign fatty tumors), and skin cancers. This procedure involves cutting out the lesion along with a surrounding margin of healthy skin to ensure complete removal.
- Laser surgery: Various laser devices are used in dermatologic surgery to treat a wide range of skin conditions, including vascular lesions (eg birthmarks, spider veins), pigmented lesions (eg freckles, sun spots, tattoos), scars, wrinkles, and unwanted hair. Laser surgery can also be used for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation.
- Cryosurgery: A procedure that uses extreme cold (liquid nitrogen) to destroy abnormal skin cells or lesions, such as warts, actinic keratoses (precancerous lesions), and skin cancers. Cryosurgery causes the targeted tissue to freeze and eventually slough off as the skin heals.
- Electrosurgery: Electrosurgical techniques use high-frequency electrical currents to cut, coagulate, or vaporise tissue. Electrosurgery is commonly used to remove benign skin growths, such as skin tags, seborrheic keratoses, and warts.
- Scar revision surgery: Procedures aimed at improving the appearance of scars caused by injury, surgery, or skin conditions such as severe acne. Scar revision techniques may include surgical excision, laser treatments, intralesional steroid injections, collagen biostimulators and dermal fillers to minimise scar visibility and improve skin texture.
